The First Caraboat 650 Legacy Just Hit the Market. Boat by Day, Caravan by Night.

A boat by day, a caravan by night, and the first one ever built is for sale right now.

I spend a fair bit of time watching the amphibious and trailerable space, because that's the world we build in. So when the first Caraboat 650 “Legacy” popped up on Boats Online this week — listed at $219,000 out of Main Beach — it caught my attention.

What the Caraboat 650 Legacy Actually Is

The pitch is the category in one line: tow it like a caravan, launch it like a boat, live on it like neither.

The Caraboat is a 6.5m composite catamaran from a Queensland design team with 30 years of catamarans behind them — only this time they built it for themselves. The Legacy is the owner's own boat, finished in classic style, and now for sale.

The headline numbers:

  • 140hp white Suzuki four-stroke — 10 hours, testing only
  • 1,100W solar + 300Ah lithium — fully electric onboard, no gas or LPG anywhere on the boat
  • 180L fresh water (2 × 90L), 12/240V hot water, pressure pump
  • Black bathroom with dedicated shower, mirrored vanity, and an OGO composting toilet
  • Galley: 118L fridge with 5L freezer, two-plate induction, microwave, twin stainless sink
  • Sleeping: two singles that convert to a double, LED touch lighting, USB reading lights, TV antenna
  • Galvanised tandem trailer with hydraulic brakes, breakaway unit, alloys and spare

Max speed 30 knots. Cruise 20. Five-year hull warranty.

Easy to tow, simple to launch, comfortable to live aboard. That's the whole idea.

Why This Listing Matters More Than the Price

At $219,000, the Legacy is not cheap. But that's not the interesting part.

For years the boat-caravan hybrid category has been promises and prototypes. The DIY crowd has been bolting pontoons to caravans (and good on them). The commercial category — real engineering, real warranties, real live-aboard comfort — has been slow to arrive.

This listing is proof it's arriving. A purpose-built, factory-backed, warranted amphibious camper with a finished interior and 1,100 watts of solar is sitting on the market next to conventional cruisers. Someone can buy it this week, tow it home behind a decent 4WD, and be on the water by the weekend.

That's a genuine milestone for the category, and it's why we're watching Caraboat with interest.

The Honest Trade-Offs

I'll say what I'd say to a mate. Nothing at this price is automatic.

It's still a trailerable. You still tow it, still launch it, still retrieve it at the ramp when the weather turns and everyone's had enough. Ten hours on the engine means it's barely run in — great for the buyer, but you don't know what you don't know yet. And a single 140hp on a 6.5m loaded live-aboard is adequate, not generous.

If you want the details, the listing is live on Boats Online.

Where CatCruiser Fits In

We've always said the same thing: the best boat is the one that doesn't need a ramp, a trailer, or a tidal window.

That's the difference between towable amphibious and true amphibious. The Caraboat tows and launches brilliantly — that's its whole design. Our vessels drive straight off the beach and back up it. No trailer, no retrieval, no reversing a tandem down a wet ramp in a crosswind. Different answer to the same question: how do you actually live on the water without the land-side hassle?

If the Legacy has you thinking about life on the water — towed or driven — come see what a purpose-built amphibious catamaran looks like.
