EV Fleet Charging Without the Grid Upgrade: Mobile Battery Power for Councils

EV Fleet Charging Without the Grid Upgrade: Mobile Battery Power for Councils

Local governments across Australia committed to net zero years ago — often well before the fleet market was ready to deliver on it. The passenger side is moving, but the heavy and commercial vehicles that dominate a council's emissions are the hardest to electrify, and the depots that would charge them frequently need expensive, slow grid upgrades before a single charger goes in.

That gap between the target and the infrastructure is exactly where a mobile battery trailer earns its place. Ezyplugs, a Gold Coast-based brand, puts 120 to 200 kWh of usable LFP storage and two 22 kW EV charging outputs on a registered, road-legal trailer. Both outputs can be used at once, and Ezyplugs rates each at roughly 100 km of range per hour of charging.

Charge where the vehicles are

Because the power is on wheels, you do not have to bring the vehicles to a fixed charger — you bring the charger to them. A depot without the electrical capacity for a bank of chargers can still run an EV fleet by rotating a battery trailer through it, or by parking one at a satellite site, a works yard, or a temporary base of operations.

The unit fills from an existing solar system, or from a normal power point off-peak, so a council already investing in rooftop solar on its facilities can move that stored energy to wherever the fleet happens to be that week.

Why it suits the government use case

  • It sidesteps the grid-upgrade bottleneck that stalls depot electrification.
  • It is a movable asset, not a fixed install — useful across multiple sites and reallocated as needs change.
  • It supports net-zero and sustainable-procurement commitments with equipment that is emissions-free in use.
  • The same trailer doubles as event power, emergency backup, or works-site power between charging duties.

For a fleet manager weighing a multi-year, capital-heavy depot rebuild against something that can be working next month, a mobile battery trailer is a pragmatic first step — and one that keeps earning once the permanent infrastructure eventually lands.

Ezyplugs supplies mobile battery units for council and government fleets. To discuss your depot and fleet needs, email plug@ezyplugs.com or visit ezyplugs.com.
