Forty per cent on batteries is the number. One hundred per cent is the plan.

Jason Rieck · Cat Cruisers · Gold Coast · 30 September 2026

On 1 September 2026, The Driven reported that the MV Yampu had begun work in South Australia. CSL Group built the 125-metre hybrid battery self-unloading bulk carrier to move limestone from Adbri's Klein Point quarry on the Yorke Peninsula to the Birkenhead cement plant in Adelaide.

My take, early. The useful figure is 40 per cent of the time on batteries. "Designed to eventually operate on 100 per cent battery power" is a direction, not today's job.

What the boat is doing

The name Yampu is from the Narungga and Kaurna languages and means "dolphin". The Driven calls it the world's first hybrid battery-powered self-unloading bulk carrier.

It recharges when docked at Adbri's Birkenhead facility. The article gives an onboard battery capacity of 6,758 kilowatt-hours and says that system puts out 600 kilowatts.

Against the previous vessel, the MV Accolade II, Yampu is expected to cut diesel use by half a million litres and Scope 1 emissions by 40 per cent.

Figures The Driven printed

  • 125 metres long
  • 6,758 kWh onboard, stated output 600 kW
  • Battery power 40 per cent of the time at the start; 100 per cent is the design intent
  • 11,900 deadweight tonnes
  • About 2.7 million tonnes of limestone a year, a 35 per cent lift in annual limestone transport capacity
  • A fixed single-point loader, one hopper, and a cargo system that does not need the ship to shift while loading

CSL chief executive Louis Martel is quoted on decarbonisation and safer, more efficient work for crews. That is a company line. The operating share is still 40 per cent.

Honest caveats

"Expected to" sits on the fuel and emissions cuts. They are not a year of measured results in this article.

The piece does not say how long a charge takes, what the shore connection is, or when the step from 40 per cent to 100 per cent would happen.

It also does not name a cell supplier or a motor brand. I am not adding either.

Half a million litres is the article's phrase. I am not converting it into a tighter number.

Where it meets a Cat Cruisers

I build trailerable electric boats on the Gold Coast. We charge from shore power and use the boat for camping. There is no CSL or Adbri deal here.

The part I recognise is the plug at the dock. Yampu's shore charge is an industrial berth and a limestone roster. Ours is a trailer boat at the end of a day on the water. Same idea, nowhere near the same scale, and 40 per cent is a reminder not to sell the end state as the start state.
