What does a night away really cost?
The sticker price is not the cost. Depreciation, rego, storage, servicing and fuel are. This works out the real per-night cost of owning a separate boat and caravan, then compares it — at the same asset value — with one Cat Cruiser that does both jobs.
Separate boat + caravan$1,592per night
One Cat Cruiser$1,208per night
The Cat Cruiser costs $383 less per night — one asset instead of two, at the same value.
Where the boat + caravan cost comes from
| Line | Per year | Per night |
|---|---|---|
| Depreciation (value lost) | $24,000 | $1,000 |
| Rego + insurance | $3,400 | $141.67 |
| Storage / berth | $4,800 | $200 |
| Servicing + upkeep | $3,600 | $150 |
| Fuel | $2,400 | $100 |
| Total | $38,200 | $1,592 |
Depreciation never leaves your account, so it feels free — but it is almost always the largest cost of owning anything. The Cat Cruiser carries it too; what it saves is the running side: one rego, one insurance and driveway storage.
